Travels with the Children

We have had a busy summer. Busier than the past two, and definitely the busiest since having two.  It feels like we’ve been on the go more than we have been still. Once I made the decision to leave my job to spend more time […]

Motherhood: The Game in Which No One Plays by the Rules

This is the 10th year I have been running this blog, and my 12th year of blogging. I feel like those deserve some sort of acclaim, but haven’t figured out how I want to celebrate yet. Maybe instead of #tbt,   I’ll do a #blogthrowback […]

Samuel Cole Salon = It’s not a haircut, it’s a lifestyle.

Samuel Cole Salon = It’s not a haircut, it’s a lifestyle.

Driving up Six Forks Road, I was nervous. In my head, I was thinking that this might be a major mistake, and berating myself for being one of those people who enter every contest that sounds remotely interesting. It was a facebook post from Raleigh Moms Blog that offered a free cut and color from Samuel Cole Salon. You just needed to post why you should be the mom who needed it. So I (jokingly but it was serious) posted Because my hair hasnt been out of a ponytail in two months. True story. For the most part it had been the more professional low pony, or sometimes a low bun for work (Im sure theres a librarian joke in there somewhere), and then at home a higher ponytail.  I actually would occasionally read articles about the variety of ponytails you could wear.
So when Jill Kornegay sent me an urgent message about winning this particular contest, I read it about 3 times.  My first thought was that I almost never win anything. I did win this awesome school bingo in 5th grade. So this was kind of a shock. I responded with No! I didnt see that I won! But Im excited!  This was a truth and lie sort of statement. I was excited, but at the same time faced with the reality of both pulling my hair out of a ponytail and getting it highlighted were daunting tasks, to say the least. I received the details from Jill, which were essentially to call Samuel Cole Salon and get set up.  Below are the details:
PRIZE DETAILS: After consultation with KatieM, winner can decide between any of the following color services:
Color Retouch $82 or Balayage (Hair Painting) $182
Glaze $82 (recommended to add shine regardless of which color service is selected)
Shampoo Cut and Blowdry $72
Grand Total $418 (Value) + $60 in Products of their choice
I can say without hesitation that I have never had $400 worth of anything done to my head before. Plus or minus? Not sure. When I called, the front desk was great. They seemed excited to be able to schedule me with a relatively new stylist to the salon, assured me she was amazing and were enthusiastic.
I arrived hot (it was more than 90 degrees and I had been working in the library for several hours), and just on time, literally!  But instead of staring me down, or making a remark, they were all
Oooh, are you the Raleigh Moms Blog winner?
Do you want to see our drink menu?

Menu, friends. Menu.  You want to see me happy? Offer me coffee and the new issue of Vogue with Nicole Kidman. ANDlet me drink the coffee while its still hot.   The combination is perfection. I would have happily just sat there and read and drunk coffee. But there was more coming. Like this really adorable stylist who, instead of just throwing me in a chair and messing with my head, sits me down and starts talking to me about my life. What I do, why Im there, what I imagine my hair could be. I think that stylists are equipped to be psychologists on the side.  She listens to me go on and on (because I know the antics of a two year old are the highlight of anyones day, yes?) and then says she has an idea and begins showing me images of how my hair could be. She is warm and encouraging and believes she can bring it back. So I make one of the hardest decisions of my life. I say, You know what? I trust you. You can do whatever you like.  Then I sit back in the chair with my coffee and Vogue and get to work on catching up on the important stuff. Like what people with absurd amounts of money are going to be wearing in New York this fall, and is Nicole Kidmans marriage still going well?  In case youre interested, rich people will be dressing like Mad Men with a touch of color this fall, and Nicole Kidman is currently living on a farm in Sydney when she isnt working.

While Im hanging out, drinking a French Vanilla Latte, Katie is hard at work behind the bar mixing and mashing a variety of colors in so many little dishes for me. She tells me shes going to pull out the color my hair had at age 12. I had really pretty hair at age 12, so Im super excited. She foils my entire head, and then I am left to hang out again.  Looking around Samuel Cole Salon, I realize what I am also really loving is that it isnt salon-y. Sure, there are typical salon chairs, a washing station, color station, etc, but the ceilings are high and there are so many windows, you feel like you could be in a lounge. The air doesnt smell strongly of chemicals and everyone in the chairs lookshappy. Hands down, this was the best salon experience of my life.

When Katie comes to get me a little while later, she tells me that she uses Oribe (pronounced Or-bay) and Wella products- vegan, never tested on animals, and free of chemicals that have been recently linked to cancer. Then she reminds me that not only am I getting this amazing cut and color, but I am also due products. I try to play it cool, like Im always getting free shampoo, but break into the same smile I had in tenth grade when my braces finally came off.  Katie recommends a shampoo, conditioner and gloss that I pay for because my hair looks that good.

One deal that Katie and I made was for me to wear my hair down every day for a week, and to really practice working with it to see how to make it both beautiful and every-day manageable. Thank you Samuel Cole Salon! I am in week 3, and not only is it still down most of the time, I am still getting compliments on it. Win, win, win.

Her Royal Highness Sets Us Up…Again

Faster than Running

Last week I had to be a grown-up. Again. Normally I can squeak by in what I lovingly refer to as pseudo-grown-up world. Thats where you are technically at a physical age in which you are considered a grown-up, but […]

Those of us who love All the Things

I havent posted about this in a while, but felt it was a good time to update you on what is going on at my house. I am ditching my hoarding ways. Seriously. Motivation? A toddler and her things. Oh, how she loves her things. Since Im not going to be the one who throws a toddlers precious belongings away, it has given me the opportunity to really look at my own stuff. Truthfully, when we examine our lives, we find stuff coming from all corners. If you think Im being metaphorical, drop by sometime.
As I have started to truly look at the life I have led, there is a multitude of feelings to go with it. The first is awe that I got any sleep, ever, during high school. My high school stuff reminds me of Wes Andersons movie Rushmore .  Even I am impressed at the number of extra curricular activities participated in, events attended and things completed during school with no caffeine.
But when you look back on these events, you have to be careful to focus on what was truly important to you. Marie Kondo asks you only to keep those items which spark joy when you touch them. She literally wants you to touch all your things to see if you enjoy them enough to keep. So its the opposite of what we normally do. Instead of looking for things to get rid of, we look to decide what we should keep.
This season for Lent, I made a commitment to God and myself to really focus on what was important in my life and truly start to let go of what was not, truly thinking of what adds to my life and family and what takes away from it.  And, truth be told even those of us who love ALL. THE. THINGS. can understand and appreciate that our lives are not about the things that surround us. What we love is what those things brought to the table- a necklace given to you by someone you love, a ticket stub from your first date.  What you carry is the memory that comes with them, and sorting through those memories is the hardest part of all.  My recommendation? Grab some Kleenex and go ahead and let yourself lament the fact that you saw Anaconda in the theater, and that you were apparently the only person to turn in poems for your high school lit mag. Consider how it relates to your life right now, how it connects you to the relationships that are important right now, and then, watch as the last of your report cards float into the recycling bin.
Stuff makes it difficult to achieve and grow in our relationships because we literally have things in the way. How many times have you thought about having someone over and then realized you wouldnt be able to eat at your dining room table? Or considered going for a walk with your family but instead felt compelled to sort throughsomething.  Pictures that lean against your wall because you like them, but havent hung them yet.  The loss of a bill or letter in a pile of mail that you havent gone through in a week.  Or maybe three weeks.
What I wrote above might not be your life. I have friends who are so on top of it I think I could show up at 8 p.m. on a Tuesday and they would whip up a gourmet meal to serve in their beautiful, already set dining rooms. Oh, and their kitchen would look like something out of Traditional Home.  But that isnt the life I have ever led- not the part about you showing up on a Tuesday at 8- truly yall are welcome anytime. Just the part about me whipping up a gourmet meal on the fly without me trashing the kitchen and most likely having to clear Duplos from an eating surface.  Ill give you Trader Joes Unexpected Cheddar and some cabernet instead, and we can sit on the couch.

But these examples are just some of the ways things have negatively affected my life.   And dont get me wrong- there are lots of positives. Like being able to find something the first time you look for it. Being able to see your computer on your desk instead of having to dig for it. The hard part is letting go of the emotions that are attached to each. Understanding that the pile of cards my grandmother sent me for my birthday isnt going to bring her back. Understanding that no one will ever know I received a frame for my high school graduation that I never used (until now). Yes, I said high school graduation. But for years the guilt over getting rid of these things- Grandma picked that out for me! That frame is really pretty I just havent found the right picture yet! has stalled my ability to let them go.   Fortunately Im learning each day about the joy that comes in growth, and the way new doors open with each item that leaves our home. Except for Siamese Dream. That stays. And so does every copy of On the Road I own (I think I have 4 different editions).  And that awesome geode I got when I was 11, lost for years, only to find in my parents garden last year.  Oh, and, of course, the nut forks.  Its a process, yall. A process.

Too Close to Home

Sometimes things come too close to home. Almost a week ago in Chapel Hill three young people were shot and killed at a condominium complex. They were killed by a man who had a dispute with them over a parking space. Some […]

The Day My Daughter Became a Mother

Pre-Christmas Thoughts

Over the last seven days, these are actual thoughts I have had or things that I have said, that I think directly connect us to both the joy of Christmas and the stress that goes with it. Merry Christmas!

1. (happened in Target): In the event of a sudden onslaught of zombies, what are my weapon choices? Ahh, the wooden Advent Calendar marked down 30%.

2.  (Harris Teeter) How did I leave without milk? How am I in my car, full of groceries, without the @!)$#K milk?

3. Maybe it’s time SL drank more water than milk.

4. Did I really just ask the guy behind the counter to help me find a “lighter oolong tea”? Who am I?

5. I’m going to go for a run. Nah, I’m going to take a nap.

6. Did Mary stress over Hannukah gifts for Jesus every year?

7. There is a Prius with a “I’m a Conservative” sticker. Right next to an Elephant sticker. Oh, irony.

8.  “Yes, I’m looking for fresh cranberries. Not canned. Well, would you mind going and looking? I know it’s 5 p.m..”

9.  The reason I shop in Fresh Market is because they offer me free coffee. Every. Time.

10. I’m pretty sure Jesus would never have demanded Lego anything.

11. While I’m worried about having the right presents under the tree, I wonder how many people around me are worried they won’t have any presents under the tree.

12. Oh, alma mater, I don’t want argyle socks in exchange for donations!

13. “Next pea that goes on the floor, well, that means dinner is over.”

14. “Welcome to our home!” (directly stolen from Christmas Vacation)

15. Maybe  I should email the Amazon Wishlist out.  No, it’s too out of control and dated.

There are so many other things floating around in that space, but these are some of the ones that have me really thinking about my own humanity. About what happens to us around the season of Advent, about how easy it is to get so distracted by the chores that need to be done, we forget to take time to always, always, be aware of how we are blessed.  I am one of them.  Merry Christmas to everyone out there who would never want anyone ever to see what is going on inside their heads at any given time.  Merry Christmas to those who walk the aisles of the mall with straight faces and don’t stop at every cookie kiosk and pretzel stand. Merry Christmas to those who literally can’t think of a single thing they want, and thus will end up with new socks or a membership to the Jelly of the Month club. Merry, Merry Christmas.

Workout Post: barre3 Raleigh

Occasionally, it is time for change. There are some fixtures, however, that dont change. Monday- Friday, barring a plague, I go to work. SL usually goes to bed by 7:30/7:45. In the morning I have oatmeal, then I kiss my baby and head off into […]
